Charles Dickens - The Chimes |

This time of year is very much a "catch up on reading" time and I started with a Dickens short story I realised I'd never read before. The Chimes was his followup to A Christmas Carol and actually far more profitable when it came out; Carol lost money (very expensive printing) but The Chimes made him a great deal of money and moved him out of the Marshalsea danger!
As it happens (and I bet you never thought I'd say this) it's not very good. It simply expands the Christmas Carol idea and the characters are not very well rounded or developed.
I'm glad I read it and my admiration for Charles remains undimmed but I have to tell you - this is not one of his best.
